Peru modernizing submarines![]() disclaimer: image is for illustration purposes only |
Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems reports it is to provide engineering and technical services for the modernization of Peruvian Navy submarines.
The contract from the Peruvian naval shipyard SIMA is worth about $44.7 million.
Work will include consulting services during the planning and realization of modernization work on four HDW 209/1200-class submarines and technical services -- such as cutting and welding on the submarines -- and provision of specialists locally for the work.
"We are pleased to be continuing our cooperation with the Peruvian navy," said Andreas Burmester, chief executive officer of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. "We have consistently expanded our service business over the years to be a reliable partner to our customers over the entire life cycle of naval vessels and submarines. This order shows we are on the right track."
The submarines to be modernized over a seven-year period were built by the company -- at that time HDW -- Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH -- in the early 1980s in Kiel, Germany.
