French tire maker Michelin Thursday won an exclusive contract worth 1.7 billion dollars to supply every branch of the US military. Michelin said it had won the 10-year contract to supply every tire needed by the US army, navy, air force and Marines around the world.

Michelin said it was already the leading supplier of tires to the army, and had invested 16 million dollars to boost its production so as to meet rising demand stemming from the Iraq conflict.

"Michelin is ready to step up as the one-stop source for all military tire needs," said Luc Minguet, the chief operating officer of Michelin Americas Truck Tires.

"Now, we'll add our expertise in logistics and supply chain management to streamline the timely supply of ground tires to US troops at home and around the globe," he said.

Streamlining the process through appointing an exclusive tire supplier will save the Pentagon "hundreds of millions of dollars," a Michelin statement said.
