The attack was almost simultaneous with a new wave of bombardment by coalition warplanes hitting southeast Baghdad around 11:45 pm (2045 GMT).
Early Thursday, a heavy air raid by US and British coalition forces killed or wounded more than 50 civilians in Mosul, a city of some 300,000 in a majority Kurdish region, according to Al-Jazeera.
The city, which lies on the River Tigris around 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast of Baghdad, has been bombed every day since March 21 by coalition forces fighting to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
