The ministers underscored their view that "the UN Security Council remains the central forum for the maintenance of international peace and security and the peaceful resolution of (the) Iraq (war)," according to a statement released by the AU.
They also expressed concern for the plight of civilians caught up in the fighting there, expressing their "grave concern over the violations of human rights which are the consequence of the war in Iraq."
The statement called on combatants to "respect and protect the rights of the civilian populations in the conflict and to fully adhere to international principles and standards."
At the meeting, organised to discuss the rights of women in Africa, ministers also expressed their solidarity with the women of Iraq.
