US special forces raided a palace used by President Saddam Hussein 90 kilometers (60 miles) outside of Baghdad, capturing no regime officials but seizing documents, a senior US commander said here Thursday.

"The raid did not yield any regime officials but documents were seized," Brigadier General Vincent Brooks told a briefing at US Central Command headquarters here.

But he declined to provide any infornation on the nature of the material seized.

The raid came as US troops were reported to have made steady gains against Baghdad, reaching a point 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the city center.
