Hezbollah fires on Israeli planes violating Lebanon airspace
TYRE, Lebanon (AFP) May 18, 2003
The radical Shiite Muslim Hezbollah movement said Sunday it had opened fire from its southern Lebanese stronghold on Israeli warplanes overflying the area.

Anti-aircraft batteries went into action against Israeli planes violating airspace over the southern ports of Tyre and Sidon, Hezbollah said.

Hezbollah fire has never hit any Israeli planes, but forces them to fly at higher altitudes.

Incidents of Israeli planes flying over Lebanon have decreased since a period of intense activity in the area at the start of April following the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq.

UN forces in Lebanon have repeatedly called on Israel to end its violations of Lebanese airspace.
