Panel named to review sexual misconduct allegations at Air Force Academy
WASHINGTON (AFP) May 27, 2003
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld named a seven-member congressionally mandated panel to review allegations of sexual misconduct at the US Air Force Academy, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The panel will conduct a 90-day study of "the policies, management and organizational practices and cultural elements of the adacemy that may have been conducive to alleged sexual misconduct, including sexual assaults and rape," the Pentagon said.

In allegations made public by Colorado Senator Wayne Allard, more than 20 female cadets have said they reported sexual harassment, assault and even rape by upperclassmen only to be ignored or punished by their superiors.

The widening scandal has led to charges against two cadets so far and prompted investigations by the air force and the Pentagon and the reassignment of the academy's top officers.

The panel named Tuesday will be led by former Florida representative Tilly Fowler.
