Al-Watan quoted Najran governor Prince Mishal bin Saud as saying Said bin Faraj bin Mohammed al-Mahri al-Yami, a Saudi national, was killed in a shootout with the guards when he refused orders to surrender and opened fire at the security forces, badly damaging their vehicles.
Yami had in his possession 100 Kalashnikov AK-47 rifles and 100 magazines of ammunition worth some 36,000 dollars, the prince said.
Saudi border guards arrest thousands of infiltrators and smugglers and seize large quantities of drugs, firearms and ammunition every year along the 1,800-km (1,125-mile) border the kingdom shares with Yemen.
