Police detain student arms dealers in central Nigeria
LAGOS (AFP) Jun 08, 2003
Police in Nigeria's central Plateau State have arrested nine students for allegedly producing arms for local warring ethnic groups and thieves, a report said Sunday.

The students of Government technical college, Kuru, near Jos, capital of the troubled state, were paraded before newsmen on Saturday, the Guardian reported.

Their arrests followed a tip-off that the students were producing guns in the school's workshop for sale to local militias involved in regular ethnic and religious clashes in the state.

Plateau State has been the scene of violent ethnic fighting in recent months, leaving hundreds of people dead and properties destroyed.

The paper said robbers also patronise the students for weapons for their operations.
