NATO defence ministers open talks
BRUSSELS (AFP) Jun 12, 2003
Defence ministers from the NATO alliance opened two days of talks in Brussels on Thursday, with a briefing on Iraq from US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld among the first items on their agenda.

Rumsfeld, who arrived in Belgium late on Wednesday from Germany, made no statement as he arrived at the talks, the first meeting of the NATO ministers since the Iraq war .

German Defence Minister Peter Struck, who met Rumsfeld on Wednesday, said on his arrival that NATO had to adapt to new threats from terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.

In addition to discussing the aftermath of the war in Iraq, which caused deep rifts in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the ministers are to debate a reorganization of the alliance's military command.
