Twenty US soldiers have lost their lives to hostile fire in Iraq since President George W. Bush declared the end of major combat operations there on May 1, the Pentagon said Friday.

The total number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since May 1 stood at 60, including 40 deaths unrelated to combat and 20 as a result of hostile fire, according to the Pentagon tally.

Since the start of the war March 20, 198 US military personnel have lost their lives -- 134 to hostile fire, and 64 to accidents and other non-combat deaths.
