General takes over as new commander for southern Israel

The new commander of the southern Israel military region, which includes the Gaza Strip, took up his post Monday, a military statement said.

A ceremony, which saw outgoing commander General Doron Almog hand over to General Dan Harel, took place in Tel Aviv and was attended by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and the army's chief of staff General Moshe Yaalon, the statement said.

According to Israeli media reports, Almog is being considered as a senior aide to Yaalon.
