Sri Lankan defence minister leaves for Israel
COLOMBO (AFP) Jul 10, 2003
Sri Lankan Defence Minister Tilak Marapane left here Thursday for an official visit to Israel, official sources said.

There was no immediate word from the government on Marapana's visit, but sources said he was accompanied by navy chief Daya Sandagiri.

Israel has been a key supplier of arms, aircraft and naval vessels to Sri Lankan security forces in their battle against Tamil Tiger guerrillas.

Security forces troops have been observing a truce with Tamil Tiger rebels since February 23 last year as part of the Norwegian-backed peace process.
