British opposition demands parliament reconvene
LONDON (AFP) Jul 19, 2003
Britain's Conservative opposition on Saturday demanded the recall of parliament from its summer recess to consider the fallout from the death of government weapons expert David Kelly.

Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith wrote to Prime Minister Tony Blair demanding lawmakers be recalled from their summer break.

The government has ordered a judicial inquiry into Kelly's death in an apparent suicide, which came just days after he was grilled by a parliamentary committee over whether he was the source of a BBC report that officials working for Blair had exaggerated Iraq's weapons capacity in order to strengthen the case for going to war earlier this year.

Duncan Smith called for a broader investigation that would also examine government handling of intelligence -- the issue at the centre of the row which led to Kelly's suicide.

"The two issues are inseparable," the Conservative leader said. "Parliament should be recalled immediately."

Blair, currently in Japan on a tour of East Asia, has so far resisted calls to cut short his trip to return home and deal with the unfolding crisis.
