Canadians head to Korea for 50th anniversary of Korean War armistice
VANCOUVER (AFP) Jul 23, 2003
Canada's minister of veterans affairs will head a 40-person delegation leaving Canada Wednesday for Korea to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the three-year Korean War.

Minister Rey Pagtakhan will lead veterans, dignitaries, students and Canadian Forces members on a 10-day pilgrimage throughout Korea.

"This pilgrimage will undoubtedly be a time of reflection and remembrance as our veterans return to the hills where they once fought for peace and left friends behind," Pagtakhan said.

Veterans, many of whom for the first time back will be returning to their former battlefields, will attend a wreath laying ceremony at the Republic of Korea National Cemetery and a ceremony at the Canadian Korean War National Memorial Garden.

On Sunday, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, delegates will travel to Panmunjom and Seoul to attend the UN Command and Republic of Korea 50th anniversary of the Korean War ceremonies along with representatives from 21 other nations.

Events in Canada marking the armistice's anniversary include a National Ceremony of Remembrance Sunday at the Korea Veterans National Wall of Remembrance at the Meadowvale Cemetery in Brampton, Ontario.
