Cache of WWII-era weapons found under Ukrainian market
KIEV (AFP) Jul 26, 2003
Some 90 shells, bombs and mines dating from World War II have been found in Ukraine, more than half of them under a market in the port city of Odessa, the emergencies ministry said Saturday.

In Odessa, the cache of 58 shells was discovered during underground repair work under the busy market, officials said.

Elsewhere, 26 bombs weighing 50 kilograms (110 pounds) each were found in the Berdicheff region, some 15 kilometres (10 miles) east of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

World War II-era munitions are still regularly discovered across this former Soviet republic, which was the scene of fierce fighting between the Soviet army and German troops between 1940 and 1945.
