Rebel soldiers looted shops during Philippine mutiny: police
MANILA (AFP) Jul 31, 2003
Police on Thursday accused soldiers who mounted a failed mutiny last weekend of looting when they occupied the Makati financial center demanding the resignation of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo.

Ice cream, instant noodles, sardines, sandwiches, fruit juice, bottled water, as well as mobile telephone units and pre-paid phone cards were missing when storekeepers returned Monday to find their shops and storerooms burgled, according to Makati police theft and robbery section chief Dioscoro Asina.

The looted shops are located in the Glorietta, an upscale mall that adjoins the Oakwood high-rise serviced apartment building occupied by nearly 300 soldiers early Sunday.

The rebellion collapsed 22 hours later after the junior officers who led the rising failed to rally more units as well as civilians to their side.

"They (rebels) are the prime suspects because they were the ones who occupied the shopping mall," Asina said over DZBB radio.

"They used cutters to gain entry through the ceiling" of a mobile phone store, and made off with 10 handsets and 50 prepaid cards, Asina said.

Rustan's Supermarket reported the loss of "sardines, noodles, and juice from their stock room," he said.

Other Glorietta kiosks and stalls notified the police over the loss of "sandwiches, waffles, ice cream, and mineral water."

Asina said police would file criminal charges against the rebels if the shopkeepers agreed to provide sworn depositions detailing the thefts.
