Arroyo rejects rebel demands to sack defense secretary

President Gloria Arroyo on Thursday rejected a demand by leaders of a weekend military mutiny to sack Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes.

"I am keeping my security team intact," Arroyo said when asked if she would fire Reyes.

On Wednesday Arroyo accepted the resignation of military intelligence chief Brigadier General Victor Corpus, whose sacking the rebels had also demanded. Corpus said he hoped his leaving would have a calming effect on the security situation.

About 300 military mutineers surrendered late Sunday, more than 20 hours after seizing a section of the Makati financial center.

They accused Arroyo and Reyes of corruption and allegedly sponsoring terrorist bombings, and demanded the resignations of Reyes, Corpus, and national police chief Hermogenes Ebdane.

But Reyes told a congressional probe into the mutiny Thursday that he did not have any intention of stepping down.

"I will resign if I am the problem. But I am not the problem, I am part of the solution," Reyes said.

"The people who want me to resign... are moving towards a certain objective, they want to reach that objective and I am standing in the way."

"I will stand in their way. I'll stay here," he said.
