Israeli army to create first female elite unit
JERUSALEM (AFP) Aug 01, 2003
The Israeli army is to create in the coming months its first female elite combat unit, which will be tasked with watching the border with Jordan in the southern Negev desert, military sources said.

The unit will be made up of light infantry battalions already operating as part of the Caracal (small desert lynx) unit in the Arava depression, the sources said.

The new unit will include at least 70 percent of women, who will have to have completed a three-year military service, instead of the 18 months generally imposed on women.
