321 soldiers charged with rebellion after failed Philippines mutiny
MANILA (AFP) Aug 01, 2003
Rebellion charges were filed Friday against all 321 soldiers who took part in a short-lived mutiny in the Philippines capital last weekend, state prosecutors said.

The government asked a lower court to deny bail to the junior officers and men, who surrendered on Sunday night after a 22-hour siege of the Makati financial district.

"After a careful evaluation of the uncontroverted evidence on record, we find and so hold that probable cause exists to warrant the indictment of respondents of the crime of coup d'etat," said the charge sheet released by the justice department.

The government alleges the mutiny was part of a larger coup attempt to unseat Arroyo and to install a 15-member junta in her place.

The charge sheet named the leaders of the revolt as Lieutenant Senior Grades Antonio Trillanes and Norberto Santiago of the Navy, Captain Laurence Somera of the Army, Air Force Second Lieutenant Jigger Montallana and Captain Edmar Sorioso of the Marines.
