Israeli Defence Minister cuts short holiday after twin bombings
JERUSALEM (AFP) Aug 12, 2003
Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz cut short his holidays in Europe on Tuesday after back-to-back suicide bombings threatened to reignite the Palestinian uprising, army radio reported.

Mofaz is expected to take part in security consultations as early as Tuesday night, following the two attacks that left one Israeli dead in the northern town Rosh Ha-Ayin and killed another outside the West Bank Jewish settlement of Ariel.

The hardline Palestinian Hamas group claimed responsibility for the second attack.

Tuesday's bloodshed was the biggest incident since militant groups proclaimed a truce on June 29.

The attacks came four days after an Israeli raid on Nablus left four Palestinians, including two Hamas members, dead. An Israeli soldier was also killed.

Hamas political leaders said after the Nablus operation they would still stick to the truce but their armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, vowed reprisals.
