Portugal launches tender for 322 armored vehicles

 Portugal has launched an international tender to upgrade its military with 322 new armored vehicles, Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso announced Thursday.

The vehicles are to replace 40-year-old equipment, with 302 destined for the army and 20 for the Portuguese navy.

"We are ready to make an extra effort to help our armed forces accomplish their mission. Modernisation of the country can not take place without that of the armed forces," Barroso said in Mafra, north of Lisbon in the presence of new army chief of staff General Luis Valenca Pinto.
