. Austria reduces military service from eight to six months
VIENNA (AFP) Jan 28, 2005
Austrian military service will be reduced from eight to six months from January 2006, Defense minister Guenther Platter said Friday.

The alternative civil service will also be reduced from 12 to nine months from the same date, Platter said in a television interview.

The decision was taken for economic reasons with the minister hoping to sell 40 percent of military properties and eventually make the army uniquely professional.

The number of conscripts in the Austrian is currently 110,000 with a further 24,000 professionals soldiers.
