"We have recently received the government plan for disarming the Janjaweed militia and have expressed our viewpoints on some of its provisions," Pronk told a Khartoum news conference.

"We do not want the government to drop this plan and prepare another one. All we want of the government is to take our viewpoints seriously," he said.

"A unified plan must be reached for disarming the Janjaweed that is to be carried out jointly by the UN, the African Union, the government and the Sudan Liberation Movement," he said, referring to the main rebel faction in Darfur which signed a May peace deal with the government.

He called for finding ways to stop the activities of the Janjaweed militiamen who he said continued to sow terror around the camps in Darfur that house some of the 2.4 million people left homeless by the more than three year old conflict in the western Sudanese region.

"We know this is no longer the government's policy but subversive acts should be stopped to permit the internally displaced persons to return to their home villages," the UN envoy said.
