Safran warns will have to raise prices in response to US tariffs Paris, April 25 (AFP) Apr 25, 2025 French aerospace and defence supplier Safran warned Friday that it would have to apply surcharges in response to US tariffs. The warning came as the company, a key supplier of commercial aircraft engines via a joint venture with GE Aerospace, reported strong first quarter revenue growth thanks in large part to parts for servicing jet engines. "The situation concerning tariffs is extremely volatile, but we shouldn't have illusions: we're going to apply surcharges on the prices charged clients," chief executive Olivier Andries told journalists. US President Donald Trump announced at the beginning April a global minimum 10 percent tariff to import goods into the United States. He unveiled much higher tariff rates on a number of nations he accused of abusing their trade relationship with the United States. However he later put those higher rates on hold until July 9 in order to negotiate trade deals, except for China, which has also slapped sky-high tariffs on US goods. Andries said US tariffs would result in higher costs for the industry and airlines, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the impact, citing the example of adjusting its supply routes. "If we manufacture spare parts for South American companies, we can go through bonded warehouses in the United States which allow us to avoid paying customs duties for parts that only transit through the United States," he said. The company posted a 16.7 percent increase in first quarter revenue to 7.3 billion euros ($8.3 billion), surpassing the 7.0 billion euros expected by analysts surveyed by Bloomberg and Factset. Safran confirmed its 2025 performance outlook, excluding any potential impact from tariffs. "Actual performance and robust momentum in both the civil aerospace and defence sectors reinforce our strong confidence in achieving our guidance, excluding any potential impact of tariffs, which it would be premature to quantify at this stage," Andries said in a statement. Safran is targeting revenue growth of 10 percent in 2025. max/uh/rl/ach
