Suspected jihadists killed at least 10 soldiers in western Niger earlier this week, a local source told AFP on Friday.The junta that took power in a 2023 coup is struggling to contain attacks by Islamist fighters linked to Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State group.
Wednesday's attack struck near the village of Garbougna, in the Tillaberi region bordering Burkina Faso and Mali, the local source told AFP.
Jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State group are reputed to be active in the region.
The source said the attack killed "around 10" soldiers who were "providing security for a bridge construction project".
WAMAPS, a network of journalists focussing on security in west Africa, said on X that 17 people had died and 34 had been seriously wounded.
