Trump 'wrong to diminish' NATO troops' Afghan role: UK PM's spokesman
London, Jan 23 (AFP) Jan 23, 2026
Donald Trump was "wrong to diminish" the role of NATO troops in Afghanistan, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesman said Friday, after the US president alleged they avoided the front line.

"The president was wrong to diminish the role of NATO troops, including British forces, in Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks on the US," the spokesman said.

He added that alongside soldiers from other NATO allies "457 British service personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan and many more were wounded... We are incredibly proud of our armed forces and their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten."
