War in the Middle East: latest developments

Here are the latest events in the Middle East war:



- Maritime ambulance reported hit -


Iran accused the United States and Israel of striking a maritime ambulance boat at an island in the Strait of Hormuz, Mehr news agency reported.

Several ships have been reported hit in the strategic waterway in recent days.


- Oil reserves release -


Germany's energy minister said it would release part of its oil reserve after the International Energy Agency (IEA) asked members to release 400 million barrels to counter soaring oil prices.

Japan's prime minister said the country would start to release its reserves on Monday.

Earlier, G7 energy ministers said they "stand ready" to take "all necessary measures" in coordination with the IEA.


- Iran aims for US, Israel targets -


Iran's army said it had attacked key targets in Israel, including the military intelligence headquarters, a naval base in Haifa and a radar system.

It also said it targeted US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.


- New 'wide-scale' strikes -


Israel's military said it had launched a new "wide-scale wave of strikes" across Iran and was hitting Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon's capital Beirut.


- Erdogan warning -


Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned: "This war must be stopped before it becomes bigger and completely engulfs the region in flames," adding that if the conflict continued "there will be more loss of life and property, and the cost to the global economy will increase even further".


- Oil prices jump -


World oil prices surged, with the international benchmark, Brent North Sea crude, jumping 5.1 percent to $92.23 per barrel and the main US contract, West Texas Intermediate, soaring 5.9 percent to $88.38 per barrel.


- Lebanon toll hits 570 -

The health ministry said Israeli strikes have killed 570 people in Lebanon so far, the health ministry said, including 439 men, 45 women and 86 children. 14 healthcare workers were among the dead.

Earlier. the ministry said an Israeli strike killed seven people and wounded 18 others in the eastern Lebanon town of Tamnin al-Tahta, in a building that state media said was "inhabited by a Syrian family".


- Thai ship hit -


A Thai bulk carrier was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the Thai navy said, with 20 crew rescued and searches ongoing for the remaining three.

It was not immediately clear whether the incident was one of three commercial ships that the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre earlier said had been hit in the Gulf.


- Fresh strike in Beirut -


Fresh Israeli strikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs after the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings.


- Iran vows to hit economic targets -

Iran's military vowed to launch strikes against US and Israeli economic targets in the region, including banks, and urged people to refrain from going within one kilometre of banks.

The warning came after overnight attacks reportedly hit an Iranian bank, killing an unspecified number of employees.


- Dubai airport drones -


Four people were injured after two drones fell near Dubai's airport, the government said, with air traffic operating as normal.


- Another ship hit off UAE -


A second container ship was hit off the coast of the UAE by an unidentified projectile, a British maritime security agency said. All crew were safe in both incidents.


- 'Safe and sound' -


Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is "safe and sound" despite reported injuries, the son of Iran's president said on Telegram.

"I heard news that Mr Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured. I have asked some friends who had connections. They told me that, thank God, he is safe and sound," said Yousef Pezeshkian, who is also a government adviser.

State television had called Khamenei a "wounded veteran of the Ramadan war" but never specified his injury.


- Doha explosions -


Several blasts rang out across the Qatari capital Doha, AFP correspondents said.


- Israel hits Beirut -


An Israeli strike hit an apartment in central Beirut, state media reported, the second targeting the heart of the Lebanese capital since the start of the latest war with Iran-backed Hezbollah.
