Journalist with Hezbollah-affiliated media released on bail
Beirut, Lebanon, March 26 (AFP) Mar 26, 2026
Lebanese authorities on Thursday released Al-Manar journalist Aly Berro on bail after three weeks of detention on charges of insulting the Lebanese president and army and inciting sectarian hatred, a judicial official told AFP.

A controversial commentator on social media, the journalist at the Hezbollah-affiliated TV channel had shared videos insulting President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and defending Hezbollah's posession of weapons.

The Beirut public prosecutor's office decided to release Berro on bail set at 100 million Lebanese pounds (around $1,100), said the official, who requested anonymity.

The Lebanese government is putting pressure on Hezbollah, whose military activities it banned on March 2, after the Iran-backed movement attacked Israel in solidarity with Tehran, drawing Lebanon into the regional war.

Two days later, the Lebanese army announced the arrest of 27 people "for the illegal possession of weapons and ammunition".

Among those arrested, four Hezbollah members are scheduled to be heard by the military court, the judicial official said on Thursday.

Two of them "are accused of transporting rockets from the Bekaa in eastern Lebanon to the south", where Hezbollah fighters are battling an Israeli incursion.

The other two are accused of "transporting machine guns and weapons of war", according to the same source.

On March 9, three Hezbollah members appeared before a military court for possession of unlicensed weapons and were released on bail.
