L-3 Communications announced Tuesday that its Integrated Systems (L-3 IS) and WESCAM (L-3 WESCAM) subsidiaries are on the team selected to provide a new maritime patrol aircraft for use by the Swedish Coast Guard. The team, led by Canada's Field Aviation, will provide three Bombardier Dash 8 Q300 aircraft equipped with a mission system designed by L-3 IS that integrates critical mission sensors. The aircraft will replace three CASA 212 aircraft currently in use. The contract calls for delivery of all three aircraft to the Swedish Coast Guard in 2007. Field Aviation will serve as prime contractor and provide Group A design, modifications and communications systems for the three aircraft provided by Bombardier. L-3 IS will provide mission system design and integration, Group B equipment and mission system test support. L-3's proven Integrated Data Handling System (IDHS) will provide the heart of a world-class maritime patrol capability, including the L-3 WESCAM MX-15 multi-sensor electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) system, as well as ELTA surveillance radar and other environmental sensors. "Our ability to tailor a solution to the needs of the Swedish Coast Guard using commercially available components will deliver the greatest possible performance while ensuring lower life-support cost," said Bob Drewes, president of L-3 IS. "This win demonstrates the flexibility and creativity we bring to mission systems development and is an important step in our plan to grow L-3's international business base." The new aircraft will provide increased endurance, range and more effective sensors than the existing system. Its maritime duties will include increased environmental and fisheries surveillance. The Dash 8 is approaching 60,000 flying hours experience in a maritime patrol environment for Australia's Coastwatch program, and has been selected by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency to replace its C-12M aircraft used for maritime patrol. "We are extremely pleased to be on the team selected for the Swedish Coast Guard aircraft replacement program," said John Dehne, president of L-3 WESCAM. "This selection continues our relationship with L3 IS, Field Aviation and the Bombardier Dash 8 platform, providing a proven sensor solution for the Swedish Coast Guard. Furthermore, this is another indication of how our MX-15 advanced imaging technology is making a positive impact on today's evolving maritime patrol missions." |
