Hughes Network Systems announced Tuesday a new contract with Datasat, a leading Ukrainian information technology and telecommunications company.

Under the agreement, which expands Datasat's existing satellite business network, HNS will supply Datasat with a Direcway network operations center (NOC) and 1,000 DW6000 remote satellite terminals, enabling Datasat to provide a new range of broadband, value-added services to the Ukrainian market.

"We are very excited about building on our successful relationship with HNS," said Alexander Danchenko, director of Datasat.

"HNS has provided a high level of technical support, supplies equipment of the highest quality, and has demonstrated strong leadership in the world market with its development of new technologies and provisioning of new services. Working with HNS has positioned Datasat to now deliver the same type of world class services in Ukraine."

For over two years, Datasat has been providing network solutions to its enterprise and government customers operating an HNS-supplied VSAT network.

With the upgrade to Direcway, Datasat will now be able to provide a wide range of additional broadband applications, including high-speed Internet/intranet access (Web browsing, e-commerce, etc.), Direcway Multicasting, Video Conferencing, Voice over IP (VoIP), and WiFi Access.

"Direcway is the only solution that can provide broadband access uniformly throughout the large territory of Ukraine," said Dr. Arunas Slekys, HNS vice president of corporate marketing and general manager, Russia/NIS/Baltic region.

"This contract means Datasat will now be the first Direcway service provider in the region, and will undoubtedly play a significant role in supporting the growth of its rapidly expanding customer base."
