US Ballistic Missile Defense Spending May Double

U.S. analysts have determined that annual Pentagon missile defense costs will nearly double by 2016. The analysts were from the Center for Defense Information, a liberal-leaning Washington think tank. Their conclusions were based on a study of a Congressional Budget Office report released last month. Currently, annual U.S. Department of of Defense missile defense expenditures are about $10 billion. CDI's analysis of the CBO report determined that annual costs are expected to rise to $18 billion by 2016. Philip Coyle, a CDI senior adviser and director of operational test and evaluation for the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 1994-2001, told UPI that "costs for missile defense might even keep going up..."

ATK To Build SRMD Motor For Short Range Interceptor

Raytheon announced Thursday that it would work with Alliant Techsystems in building an engine for the short range Stunner Interceptor. Raytheon said it would work with Allied Techsystems, or ATK, "to develop the booster motor for the flexible, affordable and lethal Stunner Interceptor, an element of the Short Range Missile Defense (SRMD) program."

Moscow Sends Missiles To Belarus After Warsaw Gets US Warplanes

Russia has sent anti-aircraft systems to Belarus in retaliation against the delivery to Poland of US-made F-16 warplanes, a source in the Moscow-led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) said Friday. "Anticipating the arrival of the F-16s in Poland, Russia has sent to Belarus four S-300 anti-aircraft systems which have already been put into service," according to a source at the headquarters of the anti-aircraft defence alliance of the CIS, quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency.

L-3 AVISYS Awarded DHS Counter-MANPADS Emerging Technologies Contract

L-3 Communications reports that its AVISYS (L-3 AVISYS) subsidiary has been awarded a contract from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to assess its second generation Civil Aircraft Protection System (CAPS2) for the protection of commercial aircraft from man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS).

  Scaneagle Completes 22 Hour Endurance Flight

Insitu reports that it has flown a preproduction prototype of the ScanEagle Block D unmanned aircraft (UA) on a flight of more than 22 hours. ScanEagle is developed in partnership with The Boeing Company and is used to provide services for the US Marine Corps and US Navy. The Block D changes incorporate multiple product enhancements to ScanEagle that reflect requests from users during its more than 25,000 hours in deployment.

Iran Uses UAV To Watch US Aircraft Carrier In Gulf

Iran's Arabic language television station on Saturday broadcast footage it claimed showed a US aircraft carrier cruising in Gulf waters it said was taken by an unmanned Iranian drone. The brief minute-long film, which was shown on Al-Alam television's evening news bulletin, showed wobbly aerial footage of an aircraft carrier stacked with war planes as it sailed.

Veteran Politician Calls For Abe To Fire Foreign Minister Over Nuke Ambitions

Veteran Japanese politician Koichi Kato called for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to fire his foreign minister and top policy aide over their remarks on going nuclear following North Korea's atom bomb test, a report said Saturday. Foreign Minister Taro Aso and Shoichi Nakagawa, the policy research chief of Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), have both called for a frank debate on going nuclear in light of Pyongyang's atom bomb on October 9.

Iran To Reply Destructively To Any Israeli Attack

Iran vowed on Sunday it would deliver a "destructive" response to any Israeli military attack on its atomic sites and said it would continue trying to boost its capacity for sensitive nuclear work. Foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Iran was still seeking to install 3,000 centrifuges by March 2007 at an atomic plant to enrich uranium, a process the West fears could be diverted to make nuclear weapons.

Iran's foreign minister said Saturday his visit to Moscow for talks on Tehran's nuclear program is still on the agenda. Manouchehr Mottaki's visit planned for Thursday was postponed to give way to the Islamic Republic's influential chief nuclear negotiator. Ali Larijani is currently in Moscow holding talks with Russia's leadership, while the countries involved in the long-running dispute aimed at dissuading Iran from enriching uranium are discussing sanctions against the defiant Islamic Republic.

SKorea Shies Away From US-Led Cargo Inspections

South Korea decided to shy away from a US-led international initiative to stop and inspect suspicious cargo, to avoid possible clashes with North Korea, a top politician said Sunday. The decision was reached Saturday at a joint meeting of top officials of the government and the ruling Uri Party, said Kim Won-Wung, a Uri Party lawmaker who chairs parliament's unification, foreign affairs and trade committee.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will probe the likelihood of the United States providing a nuclear umbrella against Iranian nuclear threats when he meets President Bush in Washington next Monday. Yediot Aharonot Friday quoted sources close to Olmert as saying he "expects to hear" such a promise from Bush. A senior Israeli official said this week he was sure Iran's long-term aim is to destroy Israel and possibly control Mecca in Saudi.

The fact that the court was the creature of a foreign power and that the proceedings reeked of a Stalinist show trial do not affect the justice of the verdict. Saddam is guilty as sin. Of what is he guilty? Saddam Hussein is guilty of governing Iraq. The specific charges against him are subsets of the main charge.
