Banner Year For US Missile Defense Plans
Washington (UPI) Jan 08, 2007
The year 2006 was a banner one for ballistic missile defense, both in the United States and for U.S. allies around the world. It was a year when demanding tests worked, when major engineering challenges were met and when more major nations than ever before signed on to serious commitments to develop BMD defenses. For the United States and the Bush administration, September was the stand-out month of a stand-out year. A Ground-based Midcourse Interceptor fired from Vandenberg Aor Force Base in California successfully intercepted and destroyed a target incoming ICBM fired from Kodiak, Alaska.

The team reviewed the SBSS Pathfinder system's architecture, design, assembly, integration and test approach, and concept of operations.

Iran Runs Iraq Terror Network
Washington (UPI) Jan 08, 2007
Newly obtained intelligence reports indicate Iran is increasing its efforts to destabilize Iraq just as President George W. Bush is reviewing his policy options. While Bush is looking at changing key military and political personnel and is considering deploying 20,000 to 40,000 additional U.S. troops in a last-ditch effort to try and impose security in the chaos that Iraq has become, new intelligence reveals Iran may have other plans.

Rumors Of War Against Iran Swirl
Washington (UPI) Jan 08, 2007
The firm denial by Israel of a report in the London Sunday Times that its Air Force was training for a strike against Iran's nuclear facilities was as predictable as it is hollow. There is no doubt that Israel's fighter-bombers have been training for a long-distance mission; NATO sources say they have for weeks been watching Israeli warplanes running flights the length of the Mediterranean to Gibraltar -- and nobody expects an Israeli strike on Gibraltar.

Israel Developing Massive New Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Jerusalem (AFP) Jan 08, 2007
Israel is developing the world's largest unmanned aircraft which will be used for long-range operations and destroying ballistic missiles as they are being launched, a security official said Monday. The Eitan has been developed by the Israel Aircraft Industries and has a wing span of 35 metres (110 feet) -- similar to that of a Boeing 737 passenger plane -- the official told AFP.

The U.S. Air Force, and its industry partner Northrop Grumman, marked the initial deployment of the first Minuteman III carrying the MK21 reentry vehicle during a ceremony at the end of 2006 at Hill Air Force Base. Under the Safety Enhanced Reentry Vehicle (SERV) program, Northrop Grumman adapted hardware and electronic equipment on the Minuteman III to accommodate the MK21 reentry vehicle, recently decommissioned from the Peacekeeper force.

Japan To Strengthen International Alliances
Tokyo (AFP) Jan 08, 2007
Japan is set to strengthen its international alliances by recognising that it shares common values with NATO, Australia and New Zealand, a report said Monday. The acknowledgement is likely to come in a joint US-Japan security report to be released in late January, when the two governments are to meet to discuss their security alliance, the Mainichi reported.

North Would Not Dare Conduct New Atomic Test Says South Korean Minister
Seoul (AFP) Jan 08, 2007
South Korea's unification minister, Seoul's top policymaker on North Korea, predicted Monday that Pyongyang would not dare conduct a second nuclear test because of the severe consequences it would face. Lee Jae-Joung told Yonhap news agency there were no signs that Pyongyang, which conducted its first underground nuclear test on October 9, would stage another.

South Korea Sees No Escalation In North Korean Nuclear Issue
Berlin (AFP) Jan 08, 2007
South Korea sees little danger of an escalation in North Korea's nuclear programme in the near future, Finance Minister Kwon O-Kyu said in an interview Monday with a German newspaper.

Kashmir Villagers Hope Guns Stay Silent
Uri, India (AFP) Jan 08, 2007
For three years, artillery duels and gunfire have been halted along the heavily militarised boundary separating Indian and Pakistani Kashmir, and Abdul Aziz hopes it stays that way. Aziz, a 45-year-old resident of Uri which sits on the Indian side of the Line of Control, said shells and bullets hit the area daily before a November 2003 ceasefire -- a prelude to a peace process started in January 2004.

Can Congress Stop An Iraq Surge
Washington DC (UPI) Jan 08, 2007
If Congressional Democrats want to block any proposed escalation in U.S. troop levels in Iraq, as new House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., hinted at the weekend, they have the constitutional authority and the legal power to do so, according to some scholars. "It's a fundamental constitutional principle that Congress can initiate and regulate war," law Prof. Neil Kinkopf of Georgia State University told United Press International.

The Year Rumsfeld's Dream Died
Washington (UPI) Jan 08, 2007
The past year saw the collapse of the Bush administration's grand strategy in Iraq and the fall of long-time Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. But it also saw the death of Rumsfeld's grand strategic vision of an ultra-lean, ultra-high-tech U.S. Army that substituted science-fiction weapons systems for brute strength.

The US War Of Ideas
Washington (UPI) Jan 05, 2007
As the "global war on terrorism" enters its sixth year, the United States government is beginning to rethink its approach to the larger battle -- the so-called "war of ideas." The war on terror is, at its heart, a physical fight against extremists. The war of ideas, on the other hand, is a philosophical debate that pits extremist ideology in the Muslim world against tolerance and freedom. So far, however, the United States seems to be losing.
