Young scientists wins $50,000 for quick phone-charging invention
Saratoga, Calif. (UPI) May 20, 2013 - A young California woman has won a $50,000 science award for inventing a "supercapacitor" that could allow a smartphone to be charged in 20 seconds.

Eesha Khare, 18, of Saratoga was given the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award for creating a fast-charging device that takes a lot of charge quickly and holds a lot of energy.

And it can last for 10,000 charging cycles, compared with around 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries, she said.

"My cellphone battery always dies," Khare told NBC News, explaining what inspired her to focus on energy-storage technology.

Researching her invention allowed her to work in her chosen area of nanochemistry, she said, "really working at the nanoscale to make significant advances in many different fields."

While so far her "supercapacitor" has only been used to power a tiny light-emitting device or LED, Khare said she envisions it inside smartphones and tablets, freeing up users from frequent trips to the nearest electrical outlet and hours of charging.

She was awarded her prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, conducted last week in Phoenix.

Apple is testing a 1.5-inch OLED display for its rumored smart watch and may have ordered an initial iWatch production run, a Taiwanese newspaper says.

Apple has begun sampling displays from RiTdisplay, a subsidiary of Taiwanese company RITEC, the Economic Times reported in an article translated by the MacRumors website Monday.

Apple had originally intended to use a 1.8-inch display in the smart watch but when that proved impractically large it shifted to the smaller 1.5-inch display size, the newspaper said.

A second Economic Times articles carried reports Apple device manufacturer Foxconn has already received orders for Apple's smart watch, but the order was just for 1,000 units, suggesting the production run was a small-scale trial for testing purposes.

A number of companies, including Apple, Samsung and Google, have been rumored to be preparing to bring a smart watch to market.

LG to introduce flexible smartphone display at Canada exhibition
Vancouver, British Columbia (UPI) May 20, 2013 - South Korea's LG Electronics says it will unveil an unbreakable and flexible plastic OLED display panel at an industry exhibition in Canada.

The technology, to be introduced at the Society for Information Display's Display Week 2013, comes at a crucial time when smart devices are being used more than ever and at increased risk for damage from drops, hits and other accidents, LG said in a release.

At 5 inches the flexible screen is aimed directly at the smartphone market, although the technology can likely be scaled up for use in tablet computers.

In April, LG announced it would take a smartphone with a flexible OLED screen to market in the fourth quarter of this year.

LG said it would also use the Vancouver event to introduce 5-inch and 7-inch HD LCD panels based on Oxide TFT technology, yielding thin, high transparency and low power consumption displays.

The smaller of the two will feature a bezel that's 1mm wide, enabling a borderless frame when installed in smartphones, the company said.
