Army orders mobile air traffic control towers

The U.S. Army has ordered additional AN/TSQ-135 mobile tower systems from Sierra Nevada Corporation.

The AN/TSQ-135 MOTS is a rapid set-up system for air traffic services during the initial phases of deployment and has been used by the 3rd Infantry Division in Afghanistan.

The system includes secure and non-secure communications radios and support equipment housed in an air traffic control tower, as well as 36kW power generators and meteorological sensors.

"MOTS is capable of being airlifted by C-17 aircraft or CH47 helicopter and supports military ATC operations world-wide by networking with other Air Traffic Service and Battle Command systems," the company said.

Sierra Nevada Corporation said it will produce five units for the Army under a follow-on low-rate production contract worth $17 million.

No information on a delivery schedule for the MOTS was disclosed.

The company delivered low-rate initial production MOTS to the Army in in 2013.
