Volcano experts in Alaska said ash in the air over the Shelikof Straight was from an eruption nearly 100 years ago.

The National Weather Service in Anchorage said the ash reported in the air Tuesday above Shelikof Strait and parts of Kodiak Island was from the Novarupta explosion in 1912 and was carried into the air by strong northerly winds, KMXT-FM, Kodiak, Alaska, reported Thursday.

Experts said a lack of snow cover in the Valley of 10,000 Smokes and Katmai National Park left the ash free to be carried by the wind.

The weather service issued a warning to pilots about potential engine damage from the volcanic ash.

Study explains connection between Hawaii's dueling volcanoes
Houston TX (SPX) Oct 29, 2012
A new Rice University-led study finds that a deep connection about 50 miles underground can explain the enigmatic behavior of two of Earth's most notable volcanoes, Hawaii's Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The study, the first to model paired volcano interactions, explains how a link in Earth's upper mantle could account for Kilauea and Mauna Loa's competition for the same deep magma supply and their sim ... read more
