Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer says it's ready to begin series production of KC-390 aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force.

The production of 28 of the airlifters follows the development and assembly of two prototype aircraft for the service.

"We are continuing the schedule that will ensure the aircraft for the FAB arrive when needed, requiring no interruptions in the air force's transport and refueling operations," said the president of the Coordinating Committee of Combat Aircraft Programs, Brig. José Augusto Crepaldi Affonso.

The KC-390 is twin-engine airlifter that is capable of performing aerial refueling in addition to transporting cargo and troops. It is being built for the Brazilian Air Force to replace the C-130 Hercules aircraft now being used.

Embraer plans an official roll-out ceremony later this month for the plane, which it hopes to sell to international customers after completing its obligations to the Brazilian military.

"From the industrial point of view, it is the crowning of the Brazilian aerospace industry because, besides being the largest aircraft ever developed and manufactured in the country, she will join -- with a high possibility of success -- in a niche market that is now dominated by large international companies," Crepaldi said.
