Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant (NPP) has performed a unique replacement and installation of a new 370-tonne turbine generator stator of its 1,000 megawatt (MW) sixth reactor, officials said Wednesday.

The stator, which is the heaviest single equipment in Kozloduy NPP, was replaced within the planned annual maintenance of this reactor, the NPP said in a statement.

Repair and supervisory activities have been carried out during the maintenance, which lasted from Sept. 5 to Oct. 27, the NPP said.

The NPP has also implemented a number of modernization activities in order to extend the period of operation of the reactor and increase its thermal capacity to 104 percent, the statement said.

Kozloduy is the only NPP in Bulgaria and provides more than one third of the total annual electricity output of the country.

The NPP has six Soviet-made reactors in total but only two of them, 1,000 MW each, are in operation. The other four 440-MW units were shut down in 2002 and 2006 as one of the conditions for Bulgaria's accession to the European Union.
