DSIT Solutions of Israel helps with nuclear power plant security

An underwater security system to protect a nuclear power plant against divers and unmanned vehicles has been ordered from Israel's DSIT Solutions Ltd.

The company, a subsidiary of U.S.- headquartered Acorn Energy Inc., said the system ordered is based on a special version of its AquaShield Diver Detection Sonar but gave no details as to the identity of the customer, in what country the nuclear power plant is located, or the contract's value.

"Less than two weeks after announcing an order for an underwater security system for a European nuclear power facility, we are very excited to announce another important order for an underwater surveillance system for an additional nuclear power station," said Dan Ben-Dov, DSIT's vice president for sales and marketing said. "We are both thankful and proud for this vote of confidence shown to us by one of the world's leading nuclear power plant operators."

The water intake system -- used by nuclear power facilities to cool the plant reactors by sucking in large volumes of water -- is a point of vulnerability for terrorists, the company said. The security system being supplied will provide automatic, long-range detection and provide operators with time to evaluate the threat and respond to it.

The system ordered will be delivered and installed by the end of this year.
