Expanding satellite broadband access to rural Europe

ESA is advancing efforts to make Europe more digitally inclusive with a new partnership aimed at extending internet access to remote and underserved regions. In an age where digital connectivity is crucial, many Europeans in rural villages, mountainous areas, and small islands still lack reliable internet access.

To address this gap, ESA has teamed up with Swedish tech firm Forsway to introduce affordable satellite broadband in areas with limited infrastructure. This collaboration is developing Xtend 5G, a hybrid broadband solution integrating satellite and terrestrial networks for reliable internet access. The initiative is co-funded under ESA's ARTES 4.0 Space for 5G/6G and Sustainable Connectivity programme, with additional support from the Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA).

Xtend 5G aims to improve quality of life for residents in remote locations by enabling access to services typically available to urban populations. For example, telehealth services will allow patients to consult healthcare professionals from home, saving them long trips to medical facilities. Students in rural areas will be better positioned to engage in online education, and small businesses will have greater opportunities to reach wider markets, boosting local economies.

This system promises secure, dependable internet whether in a city or a remote village, and provides a vital backup for emergency services during crises or natural disasters to maintain communication and safety.

"We believe hybrid communication technologies that integrate satellite, 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and mobile networks will play an important role in future connectivity ecosystems.
