Furman University Receives 1.5 Million Dollar From Duke Energy To Boost Energy Efficiency
Greenville SC (SPX) Nov 13, 2007 Furman University and Duke Energy have announced a unique partnership to create a demonstration laboratory on the university's campus that will showcase the latest technological advances in energy efficiency and sustainability. In conjunction with the construction of the new Cliffs Cottage, a Southern Living Showcase Home that will be a model of "green" design, Duke Energy has committed $1.5 million over five years to highlight the company's energy efficiency, Utility of the Future and sustainability initiatives. The immediate area around the Cliffs Cottage will be known as Duke Energy Village. "We are fortunate to be able to partner with Furman early in the evolution of their unique Showcase Home sustainability project," said Ted Schultz, vice president of energy efficiency for Duke Energy. "Through this partnership, we will be able to build technologies into the university's Cliffs Cottage that we believe will revolutionize the efficient use of energy in the future. The goal is to save our customers money through innovative energy efficiency programs, and reduce our need to build future generation capacity." The 3,000-square-foot Cliffs Cottage will be among the first residential homes in America to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. It will highlight energy efficiency, green design and the use of natural materials and products. It is currently under construction and will be completed by June 2008. Located near Furman Lake, the Showcase Home will host public tours for one year and be converted into the university's Center for Sustainability in 2009. The surrounding grounds include a formal garden with native plants, an organic vegetable garden to be managed by students and four residential eco-cottages housing 26 Furman students. "We very much appreciate Duke Energy's generous support, innovative ideas, and distinctive new energy delivery and conservation systems," said Furman president David E. Shi. "This dynamic partnership fits perfectly into our efforts to remain a national leader in the area of environmental sustainability. Our relationship will allow Furman to incorporate the latest technological initiatives related to energy efficiency, and the Duke Energy Village will educate the public about how to become more environmentally sustainable." Duke Energy officials said they will work with Furman staff to identify opportunities to incorporate features into the Cliffs Cottage such as automated metering, "next generation" home load control technology and emerging energy efficiency programs for customers. "We expect this partnership to mature over the next five years," said David Mohler, vice president and chief technology officer for Duke Energy. "Our vision includes a Duke Energy Solar Energy Learning Center where we will explore the role this renewable energy source might play in our future." Efforts are already underway between Furman and Duke Energy to develop a master plan to achieve the greatest value from the partnership. "We are excited about what we will learn from this partnership," said Mohler. "This opportunity for Duke Energy could not have come at a better time as we pursue a new model for energy efficiency and the efficient delivery of electricity to our customers." Duke Energy, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., is one of the largest electric power companies in the United States, supplies and delivers energy to approximately 4 million U.S. customers. The company has approximately 36,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity in the Midwest and the Carolinas, and natural gas distribution services in Ohio and Kentucky. In addition, Duke Energy has more than 4,000 megawatts of electric generation in Latin America, and is a joint-venture partner in a U.S. real estate company.
