Hybrid Ferry MF Finnoy Completes Three-Month Trial
by Staff Writers
Richmond, Canada (SPX) Nov 20, 2014

The conversion of the diesel electric ferry to a battery hybrid design delivered reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved maintenance costs and reduced fuel consumption.

Corvus Energy has announced the completion of the three month trial of the hybrid ferry MF Finnoy. The refit vessel used a 960V, 260kWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 40 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries. The ESS was integrated with the existing drive systems provided by Siemens AS, and powered by two 650kW diesel generators.

MF Finnoy, built in 1999, has a capacity of 350 passengers and 110 cars. She runs on the 20-minute crossing between Lauvvik and Oanes in Norway and spends about 10 minutes in harbour on each side loading and off loading.

The conversion of the diesel electric ferry to a battery hybrid design delivered reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved maintenance costs and reduced fuel consumption.

With the successful three-month trial now complete, the owner will now assess the viability of completing a permanent conversion and installation, to realize ongoing cost reductions.

"This trial proves the Corvus energy storage product is an effective solution for modernization of existing vessels, extending their usable lifespan and reducing costs for the operators," said Sean Puchalski, Vice President, Business Development of Corvus Energy.

"The integration with the Siemens drive system again provides customers with unparalleled safety, reliability, and performance."

With a large market share and multiple hybrid systems deployed in a variety of markets, Corvus Energy has the breadth of experience and expert personnel to ensure this conversion performs well now and far into the future.

New battery could propel the renewable energy market
Boston (UPI) Nov 14, 2014
One of the largest obstacles to the viability of renewable energy, like wind and solar power, is the process of storing and transporting the power once the energy's been converted to electricity. That obstacle has shrunk in recent years, as technology has improved. Now, a bigger, cleaner and more powerful battery is hitting the market. But scientists say it's important quality is its pr ... read more
