Navy Taps Raytheon For SCA-compliant Multi-Band SATCOM Terminal

NMT is a multi-band SATCOM terminal for ships, shore stations and submarines. The program addresses many significant U.S. Navy objectives including: reduction of "top side real estate," expansion of available bandwidth, and support to FORCEnet, the Navy's approach to network-centric operations.

Raytheon Company has received a $23.3 million addition to its Navy Multi-band Terminal (NMT) contract that was awarded in October 2003. The modified effort takes the original contract's value for the initial phase of development of the terminal from $61 million to $87 million.

Raytheon will now propose an architectural standard for future Navy satellite communication (SATCOM) terminal development as it designs an NMT system based on the Software Communications Architecture (SCA).

The U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command awarded the original contract to Raytheon's Network Centric Systems business. SPAWAR awarded the contract on behalf of its organizational partner, the Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communication, Computers, Intelligence and Space.

NMT is a multi-band SATCOM terminal for ships, shore stations and submarines. The program addresses many significant U.S. Navy objectives including: reduction of "top side real estate," expansion of available bandwidth, and support to FORCEnet, the Navy's approach to network-centric operations.

Under the contract modification, Raytheon will further define an architecture to support communications above two gigahertz and implement SCA- compliant SATCOM waveforms and other functions as part of the terminal development.

In addition, Raytheon will be able to prepare the Navy's currently fielded Low and Medium Data Rate (LDR and MDR) software for delivery to the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) waveform library. When the Navy exercises all contract options, the company will also develop and deliver waveforms for Extended Data Rate, Super High Frequency and Ka-band satellite communications.

"Our NMT provides solutions that are fundamental to FORCEnet's objective of providing joint interoperability for Sea Strike, Sea Shield, and Sea Basing. NMT will help the Navy to realize the vision of Sea Power 21," said Jerry Powlen, vice president of Raytheon Integrated Communication Systems.

Using NMT's multi-band SATCOM waveforms, warfighters will experience a hike in bandwidth and seamless interoperability with satellite systems and services such as: Milstar, Advanced EHF, UHF Follow-On, Polar, Advanced Polar, Wideband Gapfiller, Defense Satellite Communications System and Global Broadcast Service. Maintainers will experience higher system reliability, without the need for new logistics systems or equipment replacement.

Software waveform development work will be conducted in Marlborough, Mass. In 1999, an industry consortium led by Raytheon invented and subsequently validated the SCA. Since then, the Modular Software Radio Consortium (MSRC), an international software radio standards body, has endorsed the SCA as the definitive set of rules for the development of commercial and military software radios, worldwide.

NMT provides an integrated communications capability that supports Extremely High Frequency/AEHF Low Data Rate (LDR)/Medium Data Rate (MDR)/Extended Data Rate (XDR), Super High Frequency band, military Ka band, and Global Broadcast Service (GBS) receive-only communications.
