North Sea oil and gas staff vote to strike: union

Britain's offshore North Sea oil and gas workers have voted to strike over pay and conditions, Unite trade union said Monday.

About 1,400 Unite members working at various platforms voted for walkouts between March and June, the union announced in a statement, although no precise dates were given.

"Oil and gas companies have been given free rein to enjoy massive windfall profits in the North Sea," added Unite general secretary Sharon Graham.

"1,400 offshore workers are now set to take strike action against these employers who are raking it in but refusing to give them a fair share."

Strikes will take place at various facilities, hitting operators including BP, Shell and TotalEnergies.

"This will create a tsunami of industrial unrest in the offshore sector," warned Graham.

"Unite will support these members every step of the way in their fight for better jobs, pay and conditions."

Top oil and gas companies amassed record profits in 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine propelled prices higher, sparking accusations of profiteering from unions and the green lobby.

"Oil and gas workers have been hung out to dry, while their bosses and shareholders have raked in tens of billions of pounds over the past year," said Greenpeace UK's head of climate Mel Evans.

"It's no wonder they're taking industrial action... and we stand in solidarity with them."

Britain remains plagued by strikes as workers protest over pay failing to keep pace with rocketing inflation.

The emergency was sparked by an "oil leak in the west of the country", the state-owned company said in a statement, as video posted by Kuwaiti media showed a gushing pipe surrounded by a large slick of oil. "No injuries have occurred as a result of the leak and production has not been affected," company ... read more
