Northrop Grumman's new airborne navigation system achieves successful flight test

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has successfully carried out a flight test of its state-of-the-art airborne navigation system, known as the Embedded Global Positioning System (GPS) / Inertial Navigation System (INS) Modernization or EGI-M. This marks the first occasion that the EGI-M, which comes equipped with an M-Code capable receiver, has undergone in-flight testing.

The M-Code technology integrated into the GPS receiver is a game-changer in the field of navigation, as it allows missions to be carried out in environments where GPS signals are either contested or completely denied. A crucial part of Northrop Grumman's EGI-M program, the M-Code capable receiver is designed for rapid transmission of positioning, navigation, and timing data.

Once fully operational, the EGI-M system will sport a modular platform interface, which is developed to seamlessly integrate with existing platform navigation systems. This will aid in supporting advanced software and hardware technology upgrades, providing an effective solution for future technological advancements.

Ryan Arrington, vice president of navigation and cockpit systems at Northrop Grumman, remarked, "This flight test is a major step forward in developing our next generation airborne navigation system. The EGI-M capability developed by Northrop Grumman enables our warfighters to navigate accurately and precisely through hostile and contested environments."

The flight testing of the EGI-M system occurred in May aboard a testbed aircraft. The gathered flight test data validated that the EGI-M prototype, dubbed the M-Code capable LN-351, performed on par with Northrop Grumman's current LN-251 INS / GPS system, which incorporates modern fiber optic gyro technology.

The critical design review for the EGI-M system was completed in 2020. The launch platforms slated for Northrop Grumman's EGI-M include the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye and the F-22 Raptor. Furthermore, a host of additional fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms across the Department of Defense and allied forces have chosen Northrop Grumman's EGI-M as their future navigation solution, providing crucial support to mission-critical systems.
