Oman receives first Eurofighter Typhoon
by Stephen Carlson
Washington DC (UPI) Jun 24, 2017

The first of 12 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft has been deliver to the Royal Air Force of Oman in a ceremony held this week.

Commander of the Royal Air Force Air Vice-Marshal Mattar bin Ali bin Mattar Al Obaidani was present for the ceremony on Wednesday at Adam Air Base in Oman.

The Royal Air Force of Oman currently relies on small numbers of F-16 fighters and Hawk light attack aircraft for its combat jet needs.

Oman made the decision to purchase a squadron of Eurofighter Typhoons and eight Hawk aircraft in 2012.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a multi-role fighter built by the largest defense consortium in Europe, which includes more than 400 companies.

The aircraft has a top speed of over Mach 2 and a flight ceiling over 55,000 ft. and is capable of carrying most air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles used by European countries involved with the joint program.

It is interoperable with most ground control systems and is designed to be modular based on the deploying countries needs. Though not a stealth fighter, it has many radar-signature reducing features such as airframe shape and radar absorbing materials.
