Qatar orders multi-role refueling tankers from Airbus

The Qatar Emiri Air Force has ordered two A330 multi-role, air-to-air refueling aircraft from Airbus Defense and Space.

The company did not disclose the value of the contract for the aircraft or a delivery schedule.

The A330 MRTT is derived from the A330 commercial airliner. It has a cruise speed of 534 miles per hour, a range of 9,200 miles and a service ceiling of 42,700 feet.

Airbus Defense and Space said the refueling tanker, which can also be used as a transport, has a basic fuel capacity of 245,000 pounds. Refueling equipment includes systems such as the company's aerial refueling boom system, and/or a pair of under-wing hose and drogue pods, and/or a fuselage refueling unit.

Used as a transport, the aircraft can carry as many as 300 troops or as much as 99,000 lbs of cargo.

A total of 34 A330 MRTTs have been ordered by Australia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates Britain. India is currently in negotiations with the company to acquire six of the aircraft.
