A contract with Russia for the construction of a new unit for Argentina's Atucha Nuclear Power Plant may be signed by the end of 2016, Russian Ambassador to Argentina Viktor Koronelli said. Koronelli added that new agreements are being discussed on the delivery of low-enriched nuclear fuel and its components for research needs.

"The plans remain and haven't gone anywhere. Three nuclear power stations are currently functioning in Argentina and the construction project contains another three units, one of which is in cooperation with Russia.

"Work is currently underway on the preparation and agreement of the appropriate intergovernmental agreement. Experts are working and representatives from Rosatom regularly travel [to Argentina] and the process is continuing.

"It's premature to speak of exact dates, but I don't exclude that the document may be prepared by the end of the current year, but I don't want to get ahead of myself because much depends on the specialists who are working right now," Koronelli told RIA Novosti in an interview.

The Atucha Nuclear Power Plant is located just over 60 miles from the country's capital of Buenos Aires.
