Russia to Give 'Tough' Response to Western Sanctions Soon

Russia Needs to Produce More Military Spacecraft
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Aug 07, 2014 - Russia has to expand production of military spacecraft, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Tuesday.

"Firstly, we need to increase production of military-purpose spacecraft.

This is one of defense priorities, ensuring the country's security," Rogozin said.

Secondly, Russia needs high-tech spacecraft, which "will provide consumers in all regions of Russia with all types of communication, navigation, geodesy and cartography," according to the deputy prime minister.

Rogozin also said that the strategy of import substitution in the domestic production of spacecraft would mean Russia's technological independence.

Russia will soon unveil a series of protective economic measures - including in the sensitive space industry - aimed at taking the edge off recent Western sanctions, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Wednesday.

"All our measures will be aimed, primarily, at protecting our economy," Rogozin, who oversees the defense and space industry, told reporters during his visit to the Energia space corporation.

"We will protect ourselves in a tough, persistent and active manner," Rogozin said, adding that the measures will be announced soon.

The deputy prime minister stressed that the measures were not devised to hurt Russia's Western partners, but would seek to mitigate the impact of the recent economic restrictions on Russian companies.

"They won't be aimed at making things worse for Western companies. It's not in our interests," the deputy prime minister noted.

Rogozin said one of the main goals would be to keep the country's space and rocket industry afloat.

The announcement came after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government on Tuesday to think of counter-measures to the most recent of the EU and the US economic penalties. Putin urged the cabinet to make sure that the steps taken to support domestic manufacturers are "without detriment to consumers."
