Saab teams with Polish company for contract bid

Saab has partnered with a Polish company in its bid to win a contract to modernize the Polish Air Force's fleet of MiG-29 fighters.

The teaming agreement was signed with Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A., located in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Saab said its modernization effort would include upgrading the Soviet-era fighter with its Electronic Warfare self-protection systems.

"As an international supplier of electronic warfare systems, Saab fully recognizes the importance of finding the right partners to complement our portfolio," said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab's EW-systems business unit, which is part of its Electronic Defense Systems area. "Along with WZL2, we can use our knowledge to develop projects that are very favorable to the Polish Air Force and the Polish industry."

Saab's Electronic Warfare systems provide situational awareness to pilots and the capability to detect, localize and identify radar frequency-based threats.

Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A. is an aviation firm that is part of the Polish Armament Group with experience with Polish Air Force MiG-29 and Su-22 fighters.

Details of the teaming agreement were not disclosed.
